Anchor is a reflective and urgent work for SATB choir and piano that explores our deepening disconnect from the natural world. Amidst the "darkness" of a changing climate, the piece serves as both a sanctuary and a call to action.
The musical journey moves from the intimate, rhythmic grounding of the "breath" - symbolized by the repetitive piano motifs - to a powerful, soaring chorus that captures the "roar" of the woods. By weaving together vivid imagery of British flora and fauna, from the blackthorn and cherry to the lapwing and clover, the work grounds the listener in the specific beauty of the landscape we stand to lose.
Anchor combines accessible, rich harmonies with moments of profound, dramatic silence that will captivate your singers and audience alike. It’s highly rewarding to rehearse and adaptable for every level - from grassroots community choirs to the professional ensemble heard below.
